ショッピングセンター内フードコートの革新
きょう地元ロサンゼルスにあるセンチュリーシティのショッピングセンターに行く機会がありました。ウェストフィールドというオーストラリア資本のデベロッパーが数年前に買って、現在改装の真っ最中なのですが、フードコートのコンセプトに少々驚き、思わずアップしてしまいました。
私は仕事柄モールに行くチャンスは多いのですが、ここまで斬新なフードコートはまだ他に存在しないと思います。
- きわめてコンテンポラリーなデザイン、ここまで凝ったデザインコンセプトで作られたフードコートは珍しい。
- 食事を取るテーブルのおよそ半分はパティオ。雨が降ったら終わりだが、もともとオープンモールだし、割り切っているものと思うが、それでもその割り切りに驚いた。
- フラットパネルの多用。テナントの中には、メニュー表示にフラットパネルを使っているテナントも。これは今後の主流になってゆくものと思う。
- サーバーが注文を取るタイプのスシバーが、壁面ではなくて内側に存在。スシを売る店はいまや珍しくないが、壁面ではなくて内側に、しかもサーバーが注文をとる形式は実に斬新。
★すべてフラットパネルで商品を紹介中。中央の写真のテナントではメニューボードにフラットパネルが使われ、商品が代わる代わる映し出されていた。
★黒く見えるのがスシカウンター。サーバーが注文をとりに来る。
★席数のおそらく半分以上はパティオ。
周囲はビジネス街で、ちょうどランチタイムに行ったのですが、ビジネスパーソンでごった返していました。
私は思わず日本食を食べてしまいました。価格は8ドル台と、アメリカのランチとしては高めでしたが、味はまずまず。モール内の日本食はアメリカ人向けにアレンジしてあって、まずい場合が多いのですが、なかなかの品質でした。
理由はいろいろありますが、基本的にアングロサクソンは食にこだわらない文化を持っています。ロサンゼルスやニューヨークのアッパーエリアは例外であり、そういうエリアのモールですから特別ではあるのですが、こういうフードコートが登場してきたということは、特筆していいと私は思います。
アメリカ人の食文化も、少しずつではありますが、こだわり型へと変化しつつあるということなんでしょう。
